A Maya pyramid rises above the jungle canopy, its limestone steps worn but still standing after more than a thousand years.

Tikal was abandoned for centuries and swallowed by rainforest before archaeologists began clearing it in the 1950s — much of the surrounding jungle still hides temples that haven't been excavated at all.
