Floating Torii, Miyajima

The great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine stands in the shallows at high tide, mountains fading into the haze behind it.

At low tide the gate is stranded on wet sand and visitors walk right up to its base; a few hours later the same spot is underwater and the whole structure appears to float — the tide table matters more than the weather forecast here.
